What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland, located at the front of your neck, just below your windpipe, produces an excess of thyroid hormones. Thyroid glands that are functioning optimally produce balanced amounts of thyroid hormones. When your thyroid hormones are high, they speed up all the functions of your body, the most noticeable being your metabolism. Causes of Hyperthyroidism

The most common form of hyperthyroidism is Graves disease, which is caused by our body producing antibodies in our blood that causes our thyroid gland to mistakenly produce an excess of thyroid hormone. Some of the most common reasons that may cause hyperthyroidism are: viruses, overuse of thyroid hormone medication, and periods of extreme stress, either physical or emotional.
