    What are Migraines?

Migraine is a neurological syndrome affecting probably more than 13% of the population in the United States. Estimates show approximately 29.5 million people in the United States have migraine attacks. Possibly four out of five migraineurs report a family history of migraine. Approximately 17% of women and 6% of men in the United States experiences migraines. Women and prepubescent boys and girls experience migraines more than men possibly due to hormone fluctuations. Migraine episodes may be preceded or accompanied by sensory changes, such as auras, flashes of light or tingling in your arms or legs. As migraineurs, we also tend to have accompanying symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting, tiredness, or sensitivity to both light and sound. Causes and Triggers of Migraines

Migraine research has made great strides in the last decade, but there is still so much that is not understood about the cause of migraines. There are many theories that researchers have postulated, such as migraineurs have overly excitable brain neurons, that migraines may be caused by an imbalance in brain chemicals, or there might be a functional change in the fifth cranial nerve.

Also, there are multiple theories of what triggers a migraine. When a migraine trigger is encountered, it causes the diameter of your blood vessels to increase in your brain, affecting the surrounding tissues causing pressure and an ensuing migraine. Some of the theories are: changes in sleep patterns, odors, bright lights and stress. It’s important to understand what triggers your migraine episodes and the resulting enlargement of your blood vessels. Inside the members area of the Symptom Journal, we provide an extensive list of possible migraine triggers and we also discuss in detail the different theories, and possible risk factors, that are associated with Migraine episodes.

    Symptoms of Migraine Attacks

There are many different types of migraines. They involve different symptoms, and some have genetic markers leading some researchers to believe that migraines may be more than one type of disorder. At this time, migraines are split into two different categories or types: migraine without aura (MWOA) and migraine with aura (MWA), with Migraine without aura being the most common form of migraine.

Inside the members area of the Symptom Journal, we discuss at length the International Headache Society’s International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-II) 2004 classifications of variations of migraines, so that you are better able to understand your symptoms. An extensive list of both symptoms and triggers of migraines are presented in your Symptom Checklist and Migraine Trigger List. Through your Daily Questions you can monitor how your symptoms, treatment, and lifestyle are affecting your health outcomes.
