You Can't Manage What You Don't Track

What is ADHD?

ADHD is the acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD was known as ADD, but in 1994 it was renamed as ADHD to cover all types of the disorder. ADHD is a medical condition that affects possibly upwards of 3-7% of school age children, and 4.5 million children 5-17 years of age as of 2006 in the United States. ADHD diagnosis has increased 3% per year from 1997 to 2006. The National Institute of Mental Health considers ADHD one of the most common childhood disorders that can continue through adolescence to adulthood. Causes of ADHD

Scientists are not sure what causes ADHD, although ADHD is probably caused by a combination of factors. Researchers are looking at possible environmental factors, and studying how brain injuries, nutrition and social environment might contribute to ADHD. Some of the most prevalent theories or factors that may play a role in ADHD are: genetics, environmental factors, and altered brain function. Inside the members area of the Symptom Journal we discuss in detail the different theories and possible risk factors that are associated with childhood ADHD.

Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD has three different subtypes that are also associated with different groupings of symptoms. The three subtypes of ADHD are: predominately hyperactive-impulsive, predominately inattentive, and combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive. Treatments can relieve many of the disorder's symptoms, but there is no cure.

With treatment, most children with ADHD can be successful in school, relationships, and can lead happy lives. Children's ADHD symptoms can include: not seeming to listen when spoken to, having difficulty focusing attention on organizing and completing a task or learning something new, talking nonstop, having trouble sitting still during dinner, school or story time, and having difficulty waiting for things they want or waiting their turns in games or in class. An extensive list of symptoms for ADHD is presented in your child’s Symptom Checklist. Through your child’s Daily Questions you can monitor how their ADHD symptoms, treatment, and lifestyle are affecting their overall health.

Diagnosis, Treatment & Self-Care with ADHD

Children mature at different rates and have different personalities, temperaments, and energy levels. Most children get distracted, act impulsively, and struggle to concentrate at one time or another. Sometimes, these normal factors may be mistaken for ADD or ADHD. ADHD symptoms usually appear early in life, often between the ages of 3 and 6, and because symptoms vary from person to person, the disorder can be hard to diagnose.

Understanding the process your child’s doctor may use in diagnosing your child’s ADHD helps you ask questions and better understand your child’s diagnosis and treatment process. In the members area, there is a full description of the diagnosis process and possible tests that your child’s doctor may use to determine whether they have ADHD. We discuss the conventional treatment options along with alternative and complementary treatments that other parents with ADHD children have found helpful. Our ADHD Self-Care section for members explains how simple lifestyle choices can help improve your child’s outcomes and quality of life.

As a member of the Symptom Journal, you will be able to see how your child’s treatment, lifestyle choices, and nutrition affect how their ADHD symptoms increase or decreasen through their Reports area, allowing to make timely changes with your child’s educational and health teams that save you and your child’s time and energy. The information you receive from your child’s reports will help you make educational or health changes that help your child live their best life with ADHD.

Nutrition & Support with ADHD

In the Nutrition section for Members, we cover some of the most popular diets that parents have used to positively affect their child’s quality of life and outcomes with ADHD. We also provide an Inspiration Toolkit for our members, giving you tools, support, and motivational techniques for staying inspired with your child’s health journey. We understand the day-to-day challenges with ADHD and want to support you in creating your child’s best quality of life.
